William Joy & Emma Harper
William James Joy was born in Maulden, Bedfordshire on the 20th April 1867, the son of Abel Joy and Sarah Richardson and their sole surviving child. Probably because his four siblings all died very young (possibly in an epidemic) William was Christened twice, in Maulden just before the family emigrated and again in New Zealand just after they arrived at Lyttelton.

As a child, William lived with his family in Opawa in Christchurch, however his mother Sarah died in 1874 when he was 7.

On the 3rd June 1896, William married Emma Louisa Harper in Kaiapoi, near Christchurch. We know that William was a labourer and so possibly he was working on a farm in Kaiapoi, where Emma's family lived.

They lived in Kaiapoi for the rest of there lives, at one time at 3 Beswick St.

Between 1897 and 1909 William and Emma had 6 children: Eileen, Zoe, William George, Claude Wilfed, Harry Cornwall, Alfred, Irene Mavis and Vera.

William died on the 6th Nov 1935 aged 68, and is buried at the Anglican Cemetery in Kaiapoi.

Emma died on the 19th Oct 1957 (next of kin: Mrs Bruce, 44 Randolf St, dau) at the age of 84.
